Desde sus orígenes, el gobierno representativo fue asociado por sus principales defensores a una serie de prerequisitos sin los cuales difícilmente cabría esperar que perdurase. El objetivo del presente artículo es analizar una de estas condiciones, aquella que atiende al tipo de ciudadanía requerido, a partir de la lectura comparada entre las reflexiones que franceses e ingleses ofrecieron sobre esta temática en el período que se extiende entre la Revolución de 1848 y el establecimiento del II Imperio Francés. Un período y un escenario que, a los ojos de pensadores de la talla de J. S. Mill, W. Bagehot, A. Tocqueville, E. Laboulaye, Ch. de Rémusat, E. Vácherot o L. Prévost-Paradol, resulta particularmente interesante para discutir el modelo de ciudadanía necesario para sostener un régimen libre.Descargas
