MODERNITY, POLITICS, AND RELIGION IN THE WORK OF HANS JOAS
The journal STUDIA POLITICÆ, an academic publication from the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations at the Catholic University of Córdoba, Argentina, invites submissions of articles for its upcoming monographic volume dedicated to the analysis and discussion of Hans Joas’s work.
Hans Joas is considered one of the foremost contemporary social theorists. His work, initially connected to the renewal of pragmatism, can be situated in dialogue with historicism and hermeneutics, particularly concerning the theory of action and valuation. His European and American sources intersect in a productive tension, leading to significant contributions to political, sociological, and philosophical approaches on publicly relevant issues such as violence, values, religion, and moral universalism. In the development of his social theory, his discussions with prominent philosophers like Habermas, Taylor, Honneth, and Bellah have had a particular impact. His methodological critiques, such as those directed at sociological functionalism, and his rehabilitation of non-relativistic historicism in axiological terms are noteworthy. Furthermore, his proposal of a sociological “third way,” focused on the creativity of action, challenges the traditional dichotomy between functionalist and normative sociology. As a result, Joas occupies a central role in the current landscape of social sciences and humanities. In summary, his work interrelates the theory of action, the shaping of universal ideals, the genesis of human rights, and religion, all within the context of present social dimensions. Thus, his work has constituted an original line of research and production within social theory, whose implications Joas has been reworking since his early works.
The appeal to the pragmatist tradition and the creative solution of problems as key to understanding human action and the emergence of ideals have led them to a notable interpretation of Human Rights, the role of religion and sacralization in societies, and ultimately to a revision of the classical version of freedom stemming from left Hegelianism, which merits an academic evaluation. On the other hand, his use of history to understand from significant cases how societies could evolve without a teleological assumption, towards worse or better forms of coexistence, prompts an evaluation regarding his own assumptions. These are elements that invite a thorough reconstruction and review. It is also interesting to consider cross-cutting or derivative issues as well as implicit or neglected problems by the author that serve as interrogation and allow for a better understanding and exploitation of the possibilities of his work.
Taking Joas’s work as a starting point, STUDIA POLITICÆ invites submissions of papers proposing an analytical and critical approach to issues related to his interpretation of modernity and his political philosophy of freedom, his social theory and secularization, his understanding of sacralization and the emergence of values, his project for a universalist ethic in the face of particularism and multiculturalism, and other relevant aspects that emerge from the work of the German thinker and the conceptual cores he addresses.
Considering these central axes in Hans Joas’s work, the following thematic cores are suggested:
- Modernity, Politics, and Legitimacy
- Society, Moral Universalism, and Value Theory
- Religion, Sacralization, and Secularism in the Drift of Modernity
- Sociological Methodologies and Social Theory
- Political Philosophy and Political Theory
- Philosophical Anthropology
Submissions can be made in Spanish, English, or Portuguese and will undergo a double-blind peer review process. The selected articles will be included in edition number 64 of the journal Studia Politicæ, scheduled for release in July 2025.
The guest editors for this monographic volume are Professors Diego Fonti, Juan Manuel Saharrea, and Claudio Viale.
The deadline for article submission is September 20, 2024.

MODERNIDAD, POLITICA Y RELIGION EN LA OBRA DE HANS JOAS
La revista STUDIA POLITICÆ, publicación académica de la Facultad de Ciencia Política y Relaciones Internacionales de la Universidad Católica de Córdoba, Argentina, convoca a la presentación de artículos para la publicación en su próximo volumen monográfico, dedicado al análisis y discusión de la obra de Hans Joas.
Joas está considerado como uno de los principales teóricos sociales contemporáneos. Su obra, inicialmente relacionada a la renovación del pragmatismo, puede ubicarse en interacción con el historicismo y la hermenéutica en lo que respecta, sobre todo, a la teoría de la acción y de la valoración. Sus fuentes europeas y estadounidenses se entraman así en una tensión productiva, a partir de la que se destacan sus contribuciones a los abordajes politológicos, sociológicos y filosóficos sobre cuestiones públicamente relevantes como la violencia, los valores, la religión y el universalismo moral. En el desarrollo de su teoría social, han tenido particular impacto las discusiones con grandes filósofos como Habermas, Taylor, Honneth y Bellah, sus críticas metodológicas - por ej. al funcionalismo sociológico - y su rehabilitación de un historicismo no relativista en términos axiológicos. Además, su propuesta de una “tercera vía” sociológica enfocada en la creatividad de la acción - frente a la tradicional dicotomía entre sociología funcionalista y normativista - le ha hecho adquirir un rol central en la escena actual de las ciencias sociales y las humanidades. En síntesis, su obra interrelaciona la teoría de la acción, de la configuración de ideales universales, la génesis de los derechos humanos y de la religión, con un horizonte enfocado en problemáticas presentes de la dimensión social. Así, su obra ha constituido una línea de investigación y producción original dentro de la teoría social, cuyas implicancias Joas viene reelaborando desde sus primeros trabajos.
Su recurso a la tradición pragmatista y la solución creativa de problemas como clave para comprender la acción humana y el surgimiento de ideales, le han llevado a una notable interpretación de los Derechos Humanos, del rol de lo religioso y la sacralización en las sociedades, y finalmente a una revisión de la versión clásica de la libertad proveniente del hegelianismo de izquierda, que amerita una evaluación académica. Por otra parte, su uso de la historia para comprender a partir de casos significativos cómo las sociedades pudieron evolucionar sin un supuesto teleológico, hacia formas peores o mejores de convivencia, impulsa a una evaluación respecto de los propios supuestos de su planteo. Se trata de elementos que invitan a una reconstrucción y revisión en profundidad. También es de interés el planteo de cuestiones transversales o derivadas, así como problemáticas implícitas o desatendidas por el autor, que sirvan de interpelación y permitan una mejor comprensión y aprovechamiento de las posibilidades de su obra.
Es así que, tomando como punto de partida la obra de Joas, STUDIA POLITICÆ convoca a la presentación de trabajos que propongan un abordaje analítico y crítico de cuestiones relacionadas con su interpretación de la modernidad y su filosofía política de la libertad, su teoría social y de la secularización, su comprensión de la sacralización y del surgimiento de los valores, su proyecto de ética universalista frente al particularismo y la multiculturalidad, y otros aspectos relevantes que se desprenden de la obra del pensador alemán y de los núcleos conceptuales que aborda.
A la luz de estos ejes centrales en la obra de Hans Joas, se sugieren los siguientes núcleos temáticos:
- Modernidad, política y legitimidad
- Sociedad, universalismo moral y teoría de los valores
- Religión, sacralización y secularismo en la deriva de la modernidad
- Metodologías sociológicas y teoría social
- Filosofía política y teoría política
- Antropología filosófica y política
Los trabajos podrán enviarse en castellano, inglés o portugués, y serán sometidos a referato de “doble ciego”. La selección de artículos resultantes integrará el número 64 de la revista Studia Politicæ, cuya fecha de salida está prevista para julio de 2025.

MODERNITÄT, POLITIK UND RELIGION IM WERK VON HANS JOAS
STUDIA POLITICÆ, die Zeitschrift der Fakultät für Politikwissenschaft und Internationale Beziehungen der Universidad Católica de Córdoba, Argentinien, ruft zur Einreichung von Beiträgen für den nächsten Band auf, der der Analyse und Diskussion des Werks von Hans Joas gewidmet ist.
Joas gilt als einer der führenden zeitgenössischen Sozialtheoretiker. Sein Werk wurde ursprünglich mit der Erneuerung des Pragmatismus in Verbindung gebracht, steht aber auch in Wechselwirkung mit dem Historismus und der Hermeneutik, insbesondere im Hinblick auf die Handlungs- und Bewertungstheorie. Somit verbindet Joas europäisches und amerikanisches Denken und bringt beides in eine produktive Spannung, aus der seine Beiträge zu politischen, soziologischen und philosophischen Reflexionen zu Themen wie Gewalt, Werte, Religion und moralischer Universalismus hervorgehen.
In der Entwicklung seiner Gesellschaftstheorie haben seine Diskussionen mit bedeutenden Philosophen wie Habermas, Taylor, Honneth und Bellah, seine methodologischen Kritiken - z.B. am soziologischen Funktionalismus - und seine Rehabilitierung eines nicht-relativistischen Historismus in axiologischer Hinsicht einen besonderen Einfluss gehabt. Darüber hinaus hat er mit dem Vorschlag eines soziologischen „dritten Weges“, der sich auf die Kreativität des Handelns konzentriert - im Gegensatz zur traditionellen Dichotomie zwischen funktionalistischer und normativistischer Soziologie -, eine zentrale Rolle in der aktuellen Szene der Sozial- und Geisteswissenschaften eingenommen.
Kurzum, sein Werk verbindet die Theorie des Handelns, der Gestaltung universeller Ideale, der Entstehung der Menschenrechte und der Religion mit einem Horizont, der sich auf aktuelle Probleme der sozialen Dimension konzentriert. Auf diese Weise bildet sein Werk einen originellen Entwurf innerhalb der Sozialtheorie, deren Implikationen Joas seit seinen ersten Arbeiten immer wieder neu bearbeitet hat.
Der Rückgriff auf die pragmatische Tradition und die kreative Problemlösung als Schlüssel zum Verständnis des menschlichen Handelns und der Entstehung von Idealen hat Joas zu einer bemerkenswerten Interpretation der Menschenrechte, der Rolle der Religion und der Sakralisierung in den Gesellschaften und schließlich zu einer Revision der klassischen, aus dem linken Hegelianismus stammenden Version der Freiheit geführt, die eine wissenschaftliche Bewertung verdient. Andererseits sah sich Joas zu einer Neubewertung seines Ansatzes und der ihm zugrundeliegenden Annahmen veranlasst. Ausschlaggebend war hier die Revision jener historischer Entwicklungen, die für dafür verantwortlich scheinen, dass sich Gesellschaften ohne teleologische Annahmen in Richtung schlechterer oder besserer Formen des Zusammenlebens entwickeln konnten. Dies sind Elemente, die zu einer eingehenden Rekonstruktion und Revision einladen. Es ist auch von Interesse, transversale oder abgeleitete Fragen sowie implizite oder vom Autor vernachlässigte Probleme aufzuwerfen, die als irritierende Herausforderung dienen und ein besseres Verständnis und eine bessere Nutzung der Möglichkeiten seines Werkes zu ermöglichen.
Ausgehend von Joas' Werk bittet STUDIA POLITICÆ daher um die Einreichung von Beiträgen, die einen analytischen und kritischen Ansatz zu Fragen im Zusammenhang stehen mit Joas‘ Interpretation der Moderne und seiner politischen Philosophie der Freiheit, seinen Theorien von Gesellschaftund Säkularisierung, seinem Verständnis von Sakralisierung und der Entstehung von Werten, seinem Projekt einer universalistischen Ethik angesichts von Partikularismus und Multikulturalismus sowie anderen relevanten Aspekten.
Im Lichte dieser zentralen Aspekte im Werk von Hans Joas werden die folgenden thematischen Schwerpunkte vorgeschlagen:
- Modernität, Politik und Legitimität
- Gesellschaft, moralischer Universalismus und Werttheorie
- Religion, Sakralisierung und Säkularisierung im Wandel der Moderne
- Soziologische Methodologie und Sozialtheorie
- Politische Philosophie und politische Theorie
- Philosophische und politische Anthropologie
Die Beiträge können in spanischer, englischer oder portugiesischer Sprache eingereicht werden und werden einer doppelblinden Begutachtung unterzogen. Die daraus resultierende Auswahl von Artikeln wird in der 64-Ausgabe der Zeitschrift Studia Politicæ erscheinen, die für Juli 2025 geplant ist.
Die Gastherausgeber dieses monographischen Bandes sind die Professoren Diego Fonti, Juan Manuel Saharrea und Claudio Viale.
Die Frist für die Einreichung der Artikel ist der 20. September 2024.
