The Bridge Project is an interdisciplinary field experience organized by the Faculty of Medical Sciences of
the Pontifical Catholic University of Argentina that includes all health science-related degree programs.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the oral health and sociodemographic status of primary school students at the
Santa María Madre del Pueblo Parish School in the Rodolfo Ricciardelli neighborhood of the Autonomous
City
of Buenos Aires, surveyed as part of the aforementioned project.
METHODOLOGY: A descriptive cross-sectional study that included the population with informed consent
and assent who attended for dental check-ups. Data were obtained from complete medical records and
questionnaires completed by the children's companions. Treatment need indices (TNI), DMFT, and ceod
were recorded according to WHO criteria. The diagnosis was made by fifth-year dentistry students under
faculty supervision using natural light and examination instruments.
RESULTS: A total of 87 people were surveyed, of whom 60% had not received dental care at the time and
62% only brushed their teeth once a day.
Age: 8.52±1.82 years, DMFT: 1.50±2.01, ceod: 3.04±3.03, INT: 5.24±3.18.
CONCLUSIONS: Clinical surveys of the oral and socioeconomic status of vulnerable populations are
essential to promote the development of field experiences related to university dental outreach programs,
such as the Puente Project of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Pontifical Catholic University of
Argentina. These experiences encourage health
professionals in training to acquire experiences and knowledge that stimulate critical thinking, vocation,
and moral responsibility in response to the needs of vulnerable communities.
